Free credit score estimator! And by free, I mean you don’t have to pay anything. I don’t even mean ‘you are the product’ free

Thanks, Credit.com!
Thanks, Credit.com!

In honor of yesterday’s news that the Feds are calling for free credit scores for everyone, and in recognition that it’s probably a bit of a pipe dream, I’ve arranged with my pals at Credit.com to give you a tool that will guesstimate your credit score for free.  It’s very imperfect.  But it’s completely free. Not free like, “opt-out, we hope we trick you into a monthly fee, just give us your credit card for safe holding.”  Not even free, “but you’ll have to give us all your personal information.” Just play with the form and get a decent enough estimate of your credit score.

If you like it, as a favor to me, you can sign up for my email newsletter, which is also free, but requires an email address. It’s easier to read my email than remember to come to this site every day, or to hope I pop up on your ever-mysterious Facebook wall. Enter your email address on this page, then come back here and estimate your credit score. Have I mentioned I’d like you to sign up for my newsletter?

(NOTE: Those automated Google ads on this page may very well be offering to sell you credit scores. They’re automated, I don’t really control what shows up. But I’d be pretty wary of clicking on those ads. Yes, my investors hate me for saying that.)

As long as we’re estimating, here’s a VERY ROUGH guide to your credit score. Basically, over 700 is just about good enough.  Over 800 is great.  High 600s mean you have some things to take care of. Anything lower than that and it’s time to have a family meeting.

Also, you’ll see on the tool that you can get a more precise credit score by clicking through to Credit.com and signing up for their Credit Score Report Card.  That’s a neat tool, also free, but you will have to give them some personal information. No, I’m not getting paid for sending you their way, though I do get paid, separately, to write freelance stories for them. So you should be visiting their site anyway. Lots of great, free, advice there. Now, onto the goods.
