Target has begun to e-mail victims of its data leak, and has launched a website that will allow consumers to sign up for free credit monitoring.
Consumers can visit CreditMonitoring.Target.com right now and begin the process of signing up for credit monitoring.
The firm is taking the added step of e-mailing some victims to point them towards the sign-up page. A consumer who received a Target e-mail shared it with me.
“As you may have heard or read, Target learned in mid-December that criminals forced their way into our systems and took guest information, including debit and credit card data. Late last week, as part of our ongoing investigation, we learned that additional information, including name, mailing address, phone number or email address, was also taken. I am writing to make you aware that your name, mailing address, phone number or email address may have been taken during the intrusion,” the email, signed Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel, said.
The consumer said she had given her e-mail address to Target more than two years ago, suggesting even shoppers who haven’t visited the retailer in a long time may still be impacted by the leak.

Also on Monday, we reported that credit card hackers had access to Neiman Marcus computer systems for more than three months, as probe of the massive credit card fraud operation widens.
